   About Us

Welcome to the web site of The National Research Center for Women & Families. NRC for Women & Families is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of adults and children.

Throughout our country, there are programs and policies that have the potential to save lives and improve the quality of life for many adults and children. Unfortunately, these programs and policies do not always live up to their potential.

The National Research Center for Women & Families promotes the health and safety of women, children, and families, by using objective, research-based information to encourage new, more effective programs and policies. The Center achieves its mission by gathering and analyzing information and translating that information into clearly presented facts and policy implications that are made widely available to the public, the media, and policy makers.

Why is the National Research Center for Women & Families Needed?

On many health and social issues, media coverage and lobbying tend to reflect the views of corporations and organizations whose interpretation of "the facts" is influenced by their own financial interests. The interests and needs of ordinary women and families are often underrepresented by the army of "experts" touting the new policy or new miracle treatment. Individuals who express appropriate concerns about the lack of conclusive data or the evidence of potential risks may find it difficult to have their voices heard. As a result, programs and policies are established or maintained that do not support, and often undermine, the health and safety of women, children, and families.

We are a strong voice to provide sound science and useful information:
  • We "translate" research findings into information that is interesting and useful to the public. We work with the media to help "get the word out."

  • We educate policy makers and policy analysts through briefings, hearings, meetings and written materials based on the information.

  • We share our publications and information with other organizations, researchers, and advocates. We coordinate and strategize with them, working together to inform the public and be part of the public debate on policy issues.

  • We use that information effectively, to improve the lives of women, children, and families.
Many national women's organizations focus on women's rights, and these organizations have made and continue to make very important contributions. Our organization has a different mission: to use scientific or medical research information to improve the quality of women's lives and the lives of family members. We focus our efforts on the programs and policies that we believe can most benefit from the research-based information that we can provide and the attention that we can generate.

As a research-based center, we provide information that is based on facts, not ideology or financial ties to the programs or products we analyze. In addition to the scientific expertise of our highly qualified staff, we rely on the expertise of unbiased, well-respected researchers from across the country.

We are interested in hearing from you. Please let us know what concerns you have, what issues you would like us to work on, and how you think the needs of women and families can best be met.

Most important, NRC is a voice you can trust, providing information you can use.

We are a non-profit that, on a daily basis, truly makes a difference in the lives of thousands of women and their families. We work closely with the national and international media to get our message out to the public. We connect with policy makers and decision makers on a national level to change public policy. We work with independent researchers from around the country to bring fair, unbiased and non-corporate-funded information to the public about timely issues that matter to women and their families such as childhood obesity, the safety of medical products and treatments, domestic and dating violence, and so much more.

Our interns and fellows become part of our team by working on various projects such as:
  • Helping to gathering information, whether from the Internet, from magazine, newspaper and journal articles, or contacting researchers and other experts to ask questions.

  • Writing or co-authoring articles for print, fact sheets, press releases, briefing materials, and letters to Congress and the Executive branch. Editing and assisting with our website, co-authoring reports, grant proposals, and journal articles.

  • Attending briefings on Capitol Hill and policy panel meetings and attending policy-oriented meetings with representatives from other non-profit think tanks and advocacy organizations. You can attend meetings with Members of Congress and their staff and be in the front row when we are testifying at Advisory Panel meetings of the FDA, the National Institute of Medicine, and other federal agencies.

  • Researching and analyzing data, reviewing and critiquing research studies, and presenting information at professional meetings and policy forums.

  • Communicating with major media on issues and with the public via outreach efforts.

  • Assisting with fundraising activities, including event planning and other development issues.

  • Performing outreach to college campuses, students, and other young adults.

We are especially interested in at least one intern one who is fluent in Spanish and will help with translating health articles into Spanish, and responding to inquiries to our online health hotline that are in Spanish.

If you're interested in an internship, please send a resume and cover letter describing the dates and time commitment (hrs/week) you are available to info@center4research.org. As with most non-profits, internship stipends are rarely available, so please describe any financial requirements.
