The new food pyramid has gotten a lot of attention, but some of the information is helpful and some could literally kill you. Media coverage has tended to combine reactions to the upside-down pyramid with responses to the 10-page “dietary guide.” That is misleading because one is much more reasonable than the other.
The dietary guide includes good advice (such as eating foods in their natural state rather than processed with chemicals) as well as controversial advice (there is no credible evidence that anyone should fry food in beef tallow). It also includes some unintelligible advice, such as “prioritize targeted supplementation, diversify plant protein sources for amino acid balance, and enhance mineral bioavailability through food preparation techniques.
